Talkeetna

Area: 41.6 square miles

Talkeetna's main street is a glance into the past. The friendly citizens of this northern community mean it when they say "Welcome to beautiful downtown Talkeetna". There is a picnic area at the end of Main Street where you will often find the locals relaxing.

Talkeetna is the base for many of the climbing expeditions that challenge Mt. McKinley in the summer, so it is not unusual to find a number of international visitors walking these quiet streets.

History
Talkeetna was established as a mining town and trading post before either Wasilla or Anchorage existed. Several of its old log buildings are historical landmarks. The Talkeetna and Chulitna Rivers join the Susitna River at Talkeetna and the town reportedly takes its name from an Indian word meaning "where the rivers join".

Eight stars of gold on a field of blue,
Alaska's Flag, may it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes and the flow'rs nearby,
The gold of the early sourdough dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams,
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The Bear, the Dipper, and shining high,
The great North star with its steady light.
O'er land and sea a beacon bright,
Alaska's Flag to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.
